Before founding River Runners for Wilderness, Tom Martin co-founded the Grand Canyon Private Boaters Association, a mistake he still regrets to this day. A strong supporter of equitable river access, Martin also views protecting the wilderness resources of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon as critically important. Martin also co-founded the Grand Canyon Hikers and Backpackers Association, and the Grand Canyon Wilderness Alliance. Martin works as a freelance physical therapist, and served at the Grand Canyon Clinic at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park from 1994 to 2013. Martin is author of a number of On-River Books including Day Hikes from the River, the first hiking guide written for river runners in Grand Canyon National Park and Big Water Little Boats; Moulty Fulmer and the First Grand Canyon Dory on the Last of the Wild Colorado River. Martin edited Otis "Dock" Marston's thirty year's work From Powell To Power; A Recounting of the First One Hundred River Runners through the Grand Canyon. With Duwain Whitis, Martin has co-authored Guide to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, Lee's Ferry to South Cove, Guide to the San Juan River, and Guide to the Colorado & Green Rivers in the Canyonlands of Utah & Colorado. In 2015, Martin became the 24th person to walk the length of Grand Canyon from Lee's Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs.
