River Plan Adaptive Management Corespondence
In 2006, Grand Canyon National Park concluded an Environmental Impact Statement for the management of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. The 2006 CRMP brought about sweeping changes to the river. These changes included large increases in river access for self-guided river runners, mostly in the middle of the winter. Other sweeping changes included how do-it-yourself river runners obtained a permit to conduct a river trip in Grand Canyon. Soon after the implementation of the 2006 Colorado River Management Plan, River Runners For Wilderness began encouraging Grand Canyon National Park to modify the 2006 plan using adaptive management, a component of the plan. Below are the exchanges River Runners For Wilderness has had with the park about the need to continue to modify the river plan based on how the actual plan is working. The list below includes additional exchanges via NPS e-mail, RRFW Riverwire, and other river organizations letters on adaptive management (RRFW recieved these organizations letters through a Freedom of Information Act request in the fall of 2009).
