Stakeholder Meetings Continue

On June 24th and 25th, 2003, the Mary Orton Company, LLC, under contract to Grand Canyon National Park, will conduct two focused stakeholder workshops and an evening public workshop as part of the process to revise the Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP). The goal of the workshops is to clarify areas of agreement and disagreement among stakeholders and the public on what the Park should include in a full range of reasonable alternatives in the CRMP Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), concerning two issues:

Allocation of recreational use; and
Motor use on the river

All workshops will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Phoenix-North, located at 2577 W. Greenway Road, (602) 375-1777 or (800) 527-7715. If calling for reservations, please tell the hotel you are part of the Grand Canyon National Park group.

Two stakeholder workshops will be held:
Tuesday, June 24th: 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Wednesday, June 25th: 8:00 am to 1:00 pm

Participants for the stakeholder workshops will be pre-selected by leadership in the various stakeholder groups and will be by invitation only, although the public is encouraged to observe the proceedings and provide written comments.

A public workshop to collect input on the same two issues will be held Tuesday, June 24th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and participate.

The results of these workshops will not necessarily be directly included in the EIS. However, they will be carefully considered as the CRMP planning team formulates alternatives for study in the EIS along with scoping comments from 1997 and 2002, various laws and policies, and guidance from other Park plans. These workshops will not re-open the public scoping period, which ended November 1, 2002, but will assist the CRMP planning team in developing its draft EIS, scheduled for release this fall.
