“It’s just not enough to enjoy the wilderness; if you enjoy you incur a responsibility to be a patron. So those of us who have relished our time on wild rivers need to ask how we can give something back” explains Dr. Roderick Nash, a retired professor of History and Environmental Studies at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He is also the author of Wilderness and the American Mind, Big Drops and The Rights of Nature, A History of Environmental Ethics.
River Runners for Wilderness announces that the NorthWest Rafters Association (www.nwrafters.org/) is sponsoring a symposium, Patronage of the Wilderness, hosted in Lewis & Clark College’s Council Chambers, 0615 Palatine Hill Road, Portland, Oregon from 8 AM-5 PM, Saturday, February 25, 2006. River Runners for Wilderness is a sponsor of the multi-media program with riveting speakers and stunning slides, promising to be educational, inspiring and entertaining.
The all-day event will feature several wilderness experts, with a focus not only on our resources, but what we can do as river runners to help protect and conserve our wilderness. The program features Roger Kaye, Ph.D. Wilderness Studies, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; Verne Huser, author, historian, photographer and river runner; George Nickas, executive director of Wilderness Watch; and Dave Foreman, author, founder of Earth First! and executive director of the Rewilding Institute.
