A Weather Alert notification system is now in place for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. When an intense monsoon storm is over the Park, the notification system sends an alert to satellite based texting devices. Amanda Burnham-Marusich and her husband Macy recount their July, 2024 do-it-yourself Grand Canyon kayaking trip with their daughter Azalea (age 10) and son Wylie (age 8). Both children paddled the entire distance themselves, setting a new record as the youngest girl and boy to kayak the entire length of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. In an attempt to disrupt smallmouth bass and other warm water invasive non-native fish from establishing in Grand Canyon National Park’s section of the Colorado River, the Bureau of Reclamation has been releasing cooler water from the river outlet works or bypass tubes at Glen Canyon Dam. Reclamation began releasing water from the river outlets on July 9, 2024, to cool the river water. Beginning on Saturday, August 10, 2024, Glen Canyon Dam shall release the hourly patterns below with the August 12, 2024 pattern remaining in effect until a new notification is issued.
